About Your Trip
Journey to Cairo, a land of legendary pharaohs and pyramids, to get an inside look at the city’s culture and history. Visitors are attracted to its astonishing cultural monuments, sophisticated cuisine and electrifying atmosphere — it’s a thrilling city, defined equally by its antiquity and modern sensibilities. Wonderful experiences await — and their memories will stay with you long after you return home!
On this exciting DreamTrip, you’ll travel south of the city to the Giza pyramid complex. It’s like time stands still as you view these massive structures arising from the desert. Walk around and get a sense of the enormity of the human endeavor that built them. Then, head to the Egyptian Museum where thousands of artifacts are on exhibit, including the funeral mask of Tutankhamun, mummies of animals and items from the tombs of ancient pharaohs.
Then, take a break from pharaohs and pyramids at the Saladin Citadel of Cairo, part of UNESCO-protected Historic Cairo. This imposing fortification, built in 1183, houses museums and mosques such as the Great Mosque of Muhammad Ali Pasha, built in 1848 of alabaster. Continue to an ancient marketplace to get a glimpse into a bazaar that has sold carpets, spices and more since 1382. The next evening, you'll see Cairo from another perspective on a boat ride on the Nile River. Cruise along the shoreline for amazing views, and enjoy entertainment by hypnotic belly dancers and colorful Tanoura dancers.
From your base at gorgeous Steigenberger Hotel El Tahrir Cairo, you can do as much — or as little — as you like. Relax at the pool or in the lobby lounge, or take to the streets and see all the city has to offer. Check out the Egyptian Textile Museum to see goods such as clothes, cushions and linens. At Manial Palace and Museum, see what royal life was like with its complex of buildings that features art collections, furnishings and hunting trophies. If you like ruins, check out the Babylon Fortress in Coptic Cairo and nearby Hanging Church.
What we love:
• The Giza pyramid complex comprises 3 main pyramids — Great Pyramid of Giza, Pyramid of Menkaure and Pyramid of Khafre — as well as the Great Sphinx of Giza, cemeteries, funerary temples, valley temples and smaller queen pyramids.
• When hunger strikes, you can stop for some koshary — considered the national dish of Egypt, it consists of a hearty serving of rice, lentils, chickpeas and pasta.
• Cairo Opera House hosts operas and ballets in its large performance hall, while its open-air theater is for smaller performances like recitals.
